The fruit of the Prickly Pear Cactus is ripening. The fruit is rather a pain to eat although they are sweet. If you have never had them then imagine a pomegranate with thorns. Many old timers made some very good jelly out of the prickly pears.
I have two prickly pears growing in my back forty. I didn't want them there, but my late husband went through such hell to plant them (he stole them off a roadside plant, not understanding that the stickers WILL go through gardening gloves) that after he died I don't have the heart to rip them out while they are still small and manageable...I know I'll be sorry.
I have heard of this, but have never had the opportunity to try any--- We just don't have any cactus here. I luv pomegranate, so I'm sure this would be yummy!
Terry, they can quickly overcome an area. But with a little work they are a colorful addition to a cactus garden. I love the blooms in the spring and the fruit adds color and life to it.
