Putoff Canyon

This is the roadside park/historical marker north of Jayton, Texas. From 1900 - 1914 it was an artist retreat and resort. Zane Grey visited this resort and used the area as the background in his novel, 'The Thundering Herd.'

I recently came across an interview with Robert Duvall, who stated that, " The western is America's Shakespeare." If that is so then Zane Grey was one of it's founding bards.

One unusual aspect of this rest area is the large spacious public restroom. At the rear of the rest area is a turnstile leading to acres and acres of pasture land. As you can see in the bottom picture this outdoor restroom is well used.

Mimi, In all actuality the turnstile leads to hiking trails but as seen in the photo many use it for other purposes. People really should be more considerate of others and clean up their paper.

I've never understood the whole throw your garbage on the ground thing. And if you have to do a #2....at least bury it with the paper for god's sake!

Jayton was the real deal, a great little town. My dad and his family's from there and I spent a bunch of swell summers on a farm there as a kid. Read Jim Corder's "Chronicle of a Small Town" sometime. It's worthwhile.

I have stopped here a lot of times when we are in Girard for my family reunion. We make the trip to Jayton regularly and I had relatives that used to live there.

I have started to take the turnstile and walk around some while out there, but the first two times I tried it I heard a rattlesnake and decided that was far enough....

Watch for snakes if you have to go to the bathroom out there ;)
