Dickens County Jail

The jail was built of the same material as the courthouse. When I was in school one of our field trips was to the jail. The most vivid memory that I have of the field trip was the cell that was built for the hanging of prisoners. There is still a ring in the ceiling with a trap door under the ring. It was a perfect 'Scared Straight' moment.

I have added a link to the Dickens County website with a little more history of the jail. Click here.

Our old jail has a hanging apparatus too ( inside - second floor, of course ). I hear it was used only once.
But wait .. I always thought, hangin was done outside, in public view.

Well like they said on Lonsome Dove... If you got to be hung - it is better if your friends do it.

God Bless Texas !

It is true that there are places of great raw beauty here in Texas. But let me warn you, Mimi. As the pics will show in progressing through the summer. The promise of green through the early spring rains most often fade in the dry hot summer.

I did not know that about y'alls county jail, Phred. It was most likely a fairly common feature in these old jails.

It would certainly make one pause sitting around with a view of the ring.

It does have that western feel to it. And the trapdoor only adds to that.
